This crochet cow potholder is also simple to crochet like the pig potholder.

First, you need to make two flat oval-shaped circles. After adding facial features on to the one flat circle you will see a cute cow face. The next step is joining these two circles together to get a double thickness. And it will cover the yarn ends on the wrong side of the cow face. You will love this cute cow face on a round potholder.

Materials
4-Medium weight / Worsted / 100% Cotton / Approx: 150 total yards

Gauge: Gauge is not very important for this pattern.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • st = stitch
  • beg = beginning
  • *to ; = repeat * to the instructions.
  • [ ] work instructions within brackets as many times as directed.
  • sc2tog= [Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop] 2 times, yarn over, pull back through all 3 loops on hook at once.
  • sc3tog = [Insert the hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop] 3 times, yarn over and pull through all the 4 loops on the hook.

Notes

  • Beg ch does not count as st.
  • Gauge is not very important for this pattern.

(make 2)
With White color, make a magic/adjustable ring.

Round 1: ch 1, 10 hdc into the ring, sl st to the first st. (10 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to the first st. (20 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in each of next 4 st, hdc in each of next 5 st, 2 hdc in each of next 5 st, hdc in each of next 5 st, sl st to the first st. (30 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] 2 times, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 3 times, hdc in each of next 3 st, [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] 3 times, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 3 times, hdc in each of next 4 st, sl st to the first st. (42 sts)

Round 5: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, [hdc in each of next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st] 5 times, hdc in each of next 3 st, [hdc in each of next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st] 6 times, hdc in each st next 5 st, sl st to the first st. (54 sts)

Round 6: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, [hdc in each of next 3 st, 2 hdc in next st] 2 times, hdc in each of next 4 st, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 3 st] 2 times, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 5 st, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 3 st] 2 times, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 4 st, [2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 3 st] 2 times, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 5 st, sl st to the first st. (66 sts)

Round 7: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in each of next 26 st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 26 st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 5 st, sl st to the first st. (70 sts)

Round 8: ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to the first st. (70 sts) Fasten off and weave the ends.

Snout
With Blush yarn, ch 4,
Round 1: 3 hdc in 2nd st from the hook, hdc in next st, 3 hdc in last st, working on the opposite side of the foundation chain, hdc in next st, sl st to the first st. (8 sts) 

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in each of next 2 st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in each of next 3 st, hdc in last st, sl st to the first st. (14 sts) 

Round 3: ch 1, sc in first st, 2 hdc in each of next 4 st, sc in each of next 3 st, 2 hdc in each of next 4 st, sc in each of next 2 st, sl st to the first st. (22 sts) 

Round 4: ch 1, sc in first st and next 2 sts, 2 hdc in each of next 4 st, sc in each of next 7 st, 2 hdc in each of next 4 st, sc in each of next 4 st, sl st to the first st. (30 sts)  Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 8″ long yarn tail.

Ears (make 2)
With Black yarn, ch 3,
Row 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from the hook, 2 sc in last st, turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in each of next 2 st, sc in last st, turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (6 sts)
Row 4 and 5: repeat row 3.
Row 6: ch 1, sc in first st, [sc2tog] 2 times, sc in last st, turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: ch 1, sc in first st, sc2tog, sc in last st, turn. (3 sts)
Row 9: ch 1, start from the first st, sc3tog. (1 sc3tog)

Edging: work sc around the ears. 3 sc in each corner. sl st to the first st. (25 sts) Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 8″ long yarn tail.  

Horns (make 2)
With Brown yarn, ch 9,
Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from the hook, dc in each of next 6 st,
Edging: work sc around the horn, sl st to the first st. (I got 19 sts) Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 8″ long yarn tail.  

Finishing
Get one circle and attach a stitch marker in first st of the last round. We are going to sew facial features on this marked circle and the marked st for making a hanging loop. So make sure to attach facial features when the marked stitch facing up. Sew each ear, horns and snout (shown below) with the yarn tail and tapestry needle. With black color yarn, embroider 2 ears just above the snout and 2 dots on the snout.

Joining two pieces together
Holding two pieces together right side out, With the same color yarn begins with sc at the top of the st of two circles (don’t forget to insert the hook in that marked st of the one circle), sc in each st around the edge on both sides until last st, ch 12, sl st to the first st (made a loop), Fasten off and weave the end.
