If you want to make this hat in larger or smaller sizes, Follow the hat sizing guide-How to Crochet Hat in Any Size to make this hat in any size.

Before starting, let’s talk about how to select the stitch pattern for the hat.

Since the hat is always a small crochet project, the multiple of stitch pattern should be short and sweet. For this hat I used cluster V stitch which is work in multiple of 3. That’s mean total number of stitches for the first round of the hat should be crochet multiply of 3.

If the stitch pattern works in
  • multiple of 2, you can start first round with total number of 8, 10 or 12.
  • multiple of 4, you can start first round with total number of 12.
  • multiple of 5, you can start first round with total number of 10.

First you need to crochet top of the hat

Remember, you need to get a flat circle when you finish the first round of the crown. Make sure to add more stitches if your first round is not nicely flat.
You can start the first round with total numbers of 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12. These numbers of stitches may different due to the yarn weight and stitch pattern you use.
When adding more stitches to get a flat circle, always keep in mind about the multiple of the stitches of the selected stitch pattern.

  • Crown width = The crown width is the first part we are going to finish when crocheting a hat from top to down. This is a flat circular top of the hat by increasing each round until you get the crown width. This part can made in any basic stitches like single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. For this hat I used half double crochet.
  • Body of the hat = This is where we going to start stitch pattern we selected and continue the rounds without increasing until you reach the hat height you need.

Special stitches

Let’s start to crochet Cluster V Stitch Baby Hat

First, you need to make a magic ring. Or crochet chains 5 or 6 and slip stitch to the first chain to make a ring.

Round 1: I started first round with 9 half double crochet stitches because the cluster v stitch work multiple of 3 in rounds.
ch 1 (does not count as a st), 9 half double crochet into the ring, slip stitch to first half double crochet. (9 stitches)

Round 2: chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 half double crochet in first stitch and each of next stitch around, slip stitch to the first half double crochet. (18 stitches)

Round 3: chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 half double crochet in first stitch, *half double crochet in next stitch, 2 half double crochet in next stitch; repeat to around, slip stitch to the first half double crochet. (27 stitches)

Round 4: chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 half double crochet in first stitch, *half double crochet in each of next 2 stitches, 2 half double crochet in next stitch; repeat to around, slip stitch to the first half double crochet. (36 stitches)

Round 5: chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 half double crochet in first stitch, *half double crochet in each of next 3 stitches, 2 half double crochet in next stitch; repeat to around, slip stitch to the first half double crochet. (45 stitches)

At this point the crown completed for 0-6 size = 4.5″ diameter of my flat circle.

  • For other sizes: after you get the closest number to the size of the crown width you want.
  • Follow the hat sizing guide-How to Crochet Hat in Any Size to make this hat in any size.
  • Continue the body part until you reach the hat height you need.

Body of the hat

Now we are going to add stitch pattern to the hat. For this hat I used cluster V stitch. You can see How to crochet Cluster V Stitch in this post with step by step photos and video tutorial

Round 6: chain 2 (beginning chain does not count as stitch), cluster V stitch in first stitch *skip next 2 stitches, cluster V stitch in next stitch; repeat * to around, slip stitch to the first stitch of the cluster.

You can change the color of yarn to start the next round. If you continue with same color, crochet slip stitch until first chain-1 space to start next round.

Round 7: Join the yarn in first chain-1 space of the previous cluster V stitch, chain 2, (beginning chain 2 does not count as stitch), cluster stitch in same space, *skip next 2 stitches, cluster V st in chain-1 space of previous cluster V st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st of the cluster.

Round 8: change the color of yarn, join the yarn in first chain-1 space of the previous cluster V stitch, chain 2, (beginning chain 2 does not count as stitch), cluster stitch in same space, *skip next 2 stitches, cluster V stitch in chain-1 space of previous cluster V stitch; repeat * to around, slip stitch to the first stitch of the cluster.

Round 9: Repeat round 7

  • For larger sizes repeat rounds 9 continuously to get the hat height you want.

Please check your instructions for rounds 4 and 5.

Round 4 should read 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in each of next 2 then repeat.

Round 5 should be 2 hdc in next, hdc in each of next 3.

As written you have a increase in every other stitch. No issue for an experienced person but very confusing for a beginner.

What a cute hat! Love it! ? Round 6 instead of “skip next chain 2” it should say “skip next 2 stitches”. Could be very hard to understand for a beginner. Thanks!

Hello! I started this darling cluster v baby hat today. In going from round 3 (27 stitches) to round 4, my round 4 had 5 more stitches than 36 as noted in your directions. I ended up with 41 stitches total for round 4. What did I do wrong? Is there a misprint in the pattern?
Thank you so much for helping me!
