Crochet Puff Hearts Beanie (Baby & Child)

Since I love the puff hearts beanie in adult size, I whipped up puff hearts baby and child versions. These hats are so cute with the scattered puff hearts around it. You will need two colors to make the body of the hat and puff hearts.

Crochet Puff Hearts Beanie Free Pattern

Puff Hearts Beanie Baby & Child

Skill level: Intermediate

Finished sizes:

  • Baby = 15″ circumference / 6.75″ height
  • child = 18″ circumference / 8.5″ height

Materials: 4-Medium / Worsted / Approx: 150 total yards
(I used)
– Ice Yarn Softly Baby (50% Acrylic, 50% Polyamide)1 skein of each color for main color (C1) Lilac for baby size, Light Beige for child size
Ice yarn Favorite (100% Acrylic), Approx: 50 yards for Color 2 (C2) Lemon Yellow 
– US I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle for weaving ends
– Scissors
– pompom

Gauge: 14 hdc x 9 rows = 4″x 4″ with US I-9, 5.5mm crochet hook.

Abbreviations/special stitches (US Term)
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together
st = stitch
sk = skip
yo = yarn over
BL = Back loop
beg = beginning
(C1) = color 1
(C2) = color 2
* to ; = repeat * to the instructions.

Special stitches
puff heart st = yo, insert the hook in indicated st, yo, pull back through st, [yo, insert the hook in same st, yo, pull back through st] 2 times, yarn over, pull back through all the loops on the hook and ch 1 for secure the stitch, [yo, insert the hook in same st, yo, pull back through st] 3 times, yarn over, pull back through all the loops on the hook.

The yarns

I choose Ice Yarns Softly Baby for the main color of these hats. Ice Yarns Softly Baby is 50% Acrylic, 50% Polyamide. It is labeled #3 DK Light worsted but I feel the yarn is thicker than DK weight and perfectly match to paired with worsted weight yarn.

Notes:

  • Beg ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • This beanie work in bottom up.
  • Can be adjusted to any size. Crochet multiple of 6 rows for the band part to get your desired circumference.

Baby size

Puff Hearts Baby Beanie
Ribbed band

Leaving about 6” long yarn tail, crochet ch 7.
Row 1: with (C1) sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each st across, turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, sc in BL of each of next 4 st, sc in last st, turn. (6 sts)
Row 3 to 54: repeat row 2.
(Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle, place two short sides together and sew with the tapestry needle)

Body of the hat (Work on the long side of the band)

Round 1: with (C1) ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, sl st to the first st. (54 sts total)

Round 2: with (C1) ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to the first st. (54 sts)

Round 3: with (C1) ch 1, hdc in each of next 3 st, *sk next st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st, with (C1) hdc in each of next 3 st; repeat * to around, with (C1) sl st to the first st. (27 hdc/ 9 puff hearts)

Round 4: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in each of next 3 st, *3 hdc in chain space between 2 puff sts, hdc in each of next 3 hdc; sl st to the first st. (54 sts)

Round 5: with (C1), ch 1, sk first st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st, *with (C1) hdc in each of next 3 st, sk next st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st; repeat * to around, with (C1) sl st to the first puff st. (27 hdc/ 9 puff hearts) 

Round 6: with (C1), ch 1, *3 hdc in chain space between 2 puff sts, hdc in each of next 3 hdc; sl st to the first st. (54 sts)

Round 7: repeat round 3

Round 8: repeat round 4

Round 9: with (C1), ch 1, sk first st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st, *with (C1) hdc in next st, hdc2tog, sk next st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st; repeat * to around, with (C1) sl st to the first puff st. (18 hdc/ 9 puff hearts)

Round 10: with (C1), ch 1, *3 hdc in chain space between 2 puff sts, hdc2tog; repeat * to around, sl st to the first puff st. (36 sts)

Round 11: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in each of next 2 st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 2 hdc; sl st to the first st. (27 sts)

Round 12: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in first st, *hdc2tog, hdc in next st; sl st to the first st. (18 sts)

Round 13: with (C1), ch 1, *hdc2tog; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st. (9 sts)
Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 10” long yarn tail.

Finishing (Close top of the hat)
Turn the hat inside out first. Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and weave through spaces between stitches in the last round. Pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the hat with a few more stitches. Lastly, attach pom-pom if you like.

Child size

Puff Hearts Child Beanie
Ribbed band

Leaving about 6” long yarn tail, crochet ch 8.
Row 1: with (C1) sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each st across, turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, sc in BL of each of next 5 st, sc in last st, turn. (7 sts)
Row 3 to 60: repeat row 2.
(Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle, place two short sides together and sew with the tapestry needle)

Body of the hat (Work on the long side of the band)

Round 1: with (C1) ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, sl st to the first st. (60 sts total)

Round 2: with (C1) ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to the first st. (60 sts)

Round 3: with (C1) ch 1, hdc in each of next 3 st, *sk next st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st, with (C1) hdc in each of next 3 st; repeat * to around, with (C1) sl st to the first st. (30 hdc/ 10 puff hearts)

Round 4: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in each of next 3 st, *3 hdc in chain space between 2 puff sts, hdc in each of next 3 hdc; sl st to the first st. (60 sts)

Round 5: with (C1), ch 1, sk first st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st, *with (C1) hdc in each of next 3 st, sk next st, with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st; repeat * to around, with (C1) sl st to the first puff st. (30 hdc/ 10 puff hearts) 

Round 6: with (C1), ch 1, 3 hdc in chain space between 2 puff sts, hdc in each of next 3 hdc; sl st to the first st. (60 sts)

Round 7: repeat round 3

Round 8: repeat round 4

Round 9: repeat round 5

Round 10: repeat round 6

Round 11: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc2tog, sk next st, *with (C2) puff heart st in next st, sk next st, with (C1) hdc in next st, hdc2tog, sk next st; repeat * to around, with (C1) sl st to the first st. (20 hdc/ 10 puff hearts)

Round 12: with (C1), ch 1, hdc2tog, *3 hdc in chain space between 2 puff sts, hdc2tog; repeat * to around, sl st to the first puff st. (40 sts)

Round 13: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in each of next 2 st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 2 hdc; sl st to the first st. (30 sts)

Round 14: with (C1), ch 1, hdc in first st, *hdc2tog, hdc in next st; sl st to the first st. (20 sts)

Round 15: with (C1), ch 1, *hdc2tog; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st. (10 sts)
Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 10” long yarn tail.

Finishing (Close top of the hat)
Turn the hat inside out first. Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and weave through spaces between stitches in the last round. Pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the hat with a few more stitches. Lastly, attach pom-pom if you like.
