This is a simple granny square pattern with a sunflower in the middle. The center of the granny square is made in a circle and then turned into a square. The pattern requires less than 40 yards of yarn in total. And this 6” x 6” granny square can be whipped up in an hour. That means this sunflower granny square is great for using yarn stash.

I used some leftover cotton yarns but you can use any worsted weight yarns to make this granny square.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Finished sizes: 6″ x 6″

Materials:
(I used)

Gauge: 15 sc x 17 rows = 4″x 4″ with US H-8, 5mm crochet hook.

Abbreviations / special stitches (US Term)

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • ch-sp = chain- (number of chains) space
  • st = stitch
  • beg = beginning
  • [ ] work instructions within brackets as many times as directed
  • * to ; = work instructions within brackets as many times as directed
  • beg cluster = ch 3, yo, insert the hook in first st, yo, pull back through the st, yo, pull back through 2 loops on the hook, yo, insert the hook into the same st, yo, pull back through the st, yo, pull back through 2 loops on the hook, yo, pull back through 3 loops on the hook.
  • 3-dc cluster = yo, insert the hook in indicated st, yo, pull back through the st, yo, pull back through 2 loops on the hook, [yo, insert the hook into the same st, yo, pull back through the st, yo, pull back through 2 loops on the hook] 2 times, yo, pull back through 4 loops on the hook.

Sunflower Granny Square Pattern

With brown color, make a magic ring. 
Round 1: ch 3 (count as dc), 11 dc into the magic ring. (12 dc) 

Round 2: join yellow yarn at first st, beg cluster (see special stitches) in same st, *ch 2, cluster st (see special stitches) in next st; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2 in repeat section sl st to the first cluster. (12 clusters) 

Round 3: join white yarn at any chain space in the previous round, ch 3 (count as dc) 2 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next chain space, ch 1, (2dc, ch 3, 2dc) in next ch-sp, *[ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp] 2 times, ch 1, (2dc, ch 3, 2dc) in next ch-sp; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 1 sl st to the beg ch 3 top. (40 dc)

Before starting the next round with white color, sl st until next ch sp.
Round 4: ch 3 (count as dc), 2 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, (2dc, ch 3, 2dc) in corner ch sp, *[ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp] 3 times, ch 1, (2dc, ch 3, 2dc) in corner ch sp, repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 1 sl st to the beg ch 3 top. (52 dc)

Round 5: join yellow yarn at beg ch 3 top. ch 1 (does not count as st) sc in first st and each ch-sp and dc around the square, 3 sc in each corner ch-sp, sl st to the first sc. (80 sc)

Round 6: join brown yarn at first st. ch 1 (does not count as st) sc in first st and each ch-sp and dc around the square, *3 sc in middle st of 3 st at the each corner, sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave the ends. (88 sc)
