Totally Textured Mini Bean Stitch Beanie Free Pattern

If you are looking for a fitted beanie crochet pattern that is perfect for men and women, this Totally Textured Mini Bean Stitch beanie is great. I designed this beanie to match with the beautiful textured and a modern scarf I released earlier on the blog.

This beanie works from the bottom up. Starts with back loop single crochet ribbed band. The body of the hat is made with beautiful mini bean stitches while making front post and back post ribbed stripes. This fitted beanie pattern available in Teen and Adult sizes. The pattern can be made in solid or multiple colors. It’s a unisex design that’s perfectly suitable for boys and girls, men and women.

Skill level: Intermediate
Finished sizes: 

  • Teen = 18.5″ circumference / 7.25″ height
  • Adult = 20″ circumference / 8″ height

Materials: 4-Medium / Worsted / 100% Acrylic / Approx: 200 yards total
(I used)
– Ice Yarn Super Tweed BeigeIce yarn Chiclayo Dark Gold
– US H-8/5mm crochet hook for ribbed band
– US I-9/5.5mm crochet hook for the body of the hat
– Tapestry needle for weaving ends
– Scissors

Gauge: 14 hdc x 10 rows = 4″ with US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook

Abbreviations (US term)

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sk = skip
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sc2tog = sc 2 together
  • hdc2tog = hdc 2 together
  • fphdc = front post half double crochet
  • bphdc = back post half double crochet
  • BL = back loop
  • ch-sp = chain space
  • * to ; = repeat * to the instructions.

Special stitches

  • mini bean stitch (MB st) = insert the hook in indicated st (image 2), yo, pull up a loop (image 3), yo, insert the hook into the same st, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook) (image 4), yo, pull back through all loops on the hook (image 5), chain 1 to close the stitch (image 6)(when crocheting mb stitch to the previous MB stitch, work MB st in the small space at the side of the previous MB st (Image 1)) 
How to crochet mini bean stitch

Notes:
– beg ch does not count as st.
– This fitted beanie works from the bottom up.
– This pattern available in 2 sizes. The adult size crocheted in solid color and the teen size crocheted with 2 colors

Teen = 18.5″ circumference / 7.25″ height

Note: For the teen size I used Ice Yarn Super Tweed BeigeIce yarn Chiclayo Dark Gold

Ribbed band

With Dark Gold color, Leaving about 6” long yarn tail, crochet ch 6 with US H-8 /5mm crochet hook.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each st across, turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, sc in BL of each of next 3 st, sc in last st, turn. (5 sts)
Row 3 to 64: repeat row 2.
(Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle, place two short sides together and sew with the tapestry needle)

Body of the hat (work on the long side of the band)

Round 1: (RS) with US I-9/5.5mm crochet hook, ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, sl st to the first st. (64 sts total)

Round 2: with Beige color (RS) ch 1, MB st in first st (see special stitches above), *sk next st, MB st in next st; repeat * to around, (add a stitch marker into the last MB stitch, you can see the small space at the side of the MB st, attach the stitch marker into it before starting the next round-image 1 below), sl st to the first st, turn the work at the end of the round ( 32 sts)

Round 3: (WS) ch 1, MB st in the side of the last MB st in the previous row (marked st-image 2 & 3 above) *MB st in the side of the next MB st (you can see the small space at the side of the MB st – see special stitches above); repeat * to around, (add a stitch marker in the small space of the last MB stitch before starting the next round), sl st to the first st, turn the work at the end of the round. (32 sts)

Round 4: (RS) repeat round 3, Do not turn the work.

Round 5: with Dark Gold color (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in each st and chain across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (64 sts)

Round 6: with Beige color (RS) ch 1, (work on 3rd loop) sc in 3rd loop of first st and each st across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (64 sts)

Round 7: (RS) ch 1, fphdc in first st, *bphdc in next st, fphdc in next st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (32 fphdc / 32 bphdc)

Round 8: with Dark Gold color (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in each st across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (64 sts)

Round 9: with Beige color (RS) ch 1, (work on 3rd loop) sc in 3rd loop of first st and each st across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (64 sts)

Round 10: (RS) ch 1, MB st in the first st, *sk next st, MB st in next st; repeat * to around, (add a stitch marker in the small space of the last MB stitch before starting the next round), sl st to the first st, turn the work at the end of the round. (32 sts)

Round 11: (WS) ch 1, MB st in the side of the last MB st in the previous row (marked st) *MB st in the side of the next MB st (you can see the small space at the side of the MB st – see special stitches above); repeat * to around, (add a stitch marker in the small space of the last MB stitch before starting the next round), sl st to the first st, turn the work at the end of the round. (32 sts)

Round 12: (RS) repeat round 11, do not turn the work.

Round 13: with Dark Gold color (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st and each of next 5 st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 6 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (56 sts)

Round 14: with Beige color (RS) ch 1, (work on 3rd loop) sc in 3rd loop of first st and each of next 4 st, *sc2tog, sc in each of next 5 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (48 sts)

Round 15: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st and each of next 3 st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 4 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (40 sts)

Round 16: (RS) ch 1, sc in first st and each of next 2 st, *sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (32 sts)

Round 17: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st and next st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 2 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (24 sts)

Round 18: (RS) ch 1, sc in first st, *sc2tog, sc in next st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (16 sts)

Round 19: (RS) ch 1, *hdc2tog; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st. (8 sts) Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 10” long yarn tail.

Finishing (Close top of the hat)
Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and weave through spaces between hdc2tog in the last round. Pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the hat with a few more stitches. 

Adult = 20″ circumference / 8″ height

Ribbed band

Round 4: (RS) repeat round 3, Do not turn the work.

Round 5: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in each st and chain across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (72 sts)

Round 6: (RS) ch 1, (work on 3rd loop) sc in 3rd loop of first st and each st across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (72 sts)

Round 7: (RS) ch 1, fphdc in first st, *bphdc in next st, fphdc in next st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (36 fphdc / 36 bphdc)

Round 8: (RS) repeat round 7, do not turn.

Round 9: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc in each st across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (72 sts)

Round 10: (RS) ch 1, (work on 3rd loop) sc in 3rd loop of first st and each st across, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (72 sts)

Round 11: (RS) ch 1, MB st in the first st, *sk next st, MB st in next st; repeat * to around, (add a stitch marker in the small space of the last MB stitch before starting the next round), sl st to the first st, turn the work at the end of the round. (36 sts)

Round 12: (WS) ch 1, MB st in the side of the last MB st in the previous row (marked st) *MB st in the side of the next MB st (you can see the small space at the side of the MB st – see special stitches above); repeat * to around, (add a stitch marker in the small space of the last MB stitch before starting the next round), sl st to the first st, turn the work at the end of the round. (36 sts)

Round 13: (RS) repeat round 12, do not turn the work.

Round 14: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st and each of next 5 st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 6 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (63 sts)

Round 15: (RS) ch 1, (work on 3rd loop) sc in 3rd loop of first st and each of next 4 st, *sc2tog, sc in each of next 5 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (54 sts)

Round 16: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st and each of next 3 st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 4 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (45 sts)

Round 17: (RS) ch 1, sc in first st and each of next 2 st, *sc2tog, sc in each of next 3 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (36 sts)

Round 18: (RS) ch 1, hdc in first st and next st, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 2 st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (27 sts)

Round 19: (RS) ch 1, sc in first st, *sc2tog, sc in next st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st, do not turn. (18 sts)

Round 20: (RS) ch 1, *hdc2tog; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st. (9 sts) Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 10” long yarn tail.

Finishing (Close top of the hat)
Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and weave through spaces between hdc2tog in the last round. Pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the hat with a few more stitches.
