Make mittens to your own measurements

If you think your kids hand measurements do not meet the sizes of mittens below you can adjust the size and personalized your own mittens by following guidelines below.

I have included 3 kids sizes, Toddler (small, large) and child. If you want to make smaller or larger sizes mitten the easiest way you can do it is by sizing up and down the hook size.

But I will guide you how making your own pair of mittens to go with your own measurements. Scroll down to see everything you need to know before starting to crochet basic mittens to your own measurements.

  • First, measure the circumference of the kid’s palm above the thumb.
  • Crochet foundation chains to fit your measurements.
  • And compare the measurement you got with the 3 sizes mittens below and select the mittens pattern that has the closest number to the measurement you get.
  • Follow the hand shaping and thumb hole part of the selected pattern.
  • Continue rounds without increasing until your little finger pinky is covered.
  • Then follow the decreasing and close the top of the selected pattern.
  • Make thumb and double ribbed cuff.

Get your materials ready

You can select any worsted weight yarns and colors (solid or multiple colors) you wish to use. Make them with multiple colors, in stripes also you can use self-striping yarn too. I think the gauge is not very important to make mittens to your own measurements, but check and get the right gauge first if you need the same finished sizes of the three kids sizes below listed in the pattern description.

About the pattern

This pattern is simple and fast to crochet with half double crochet and single crochet stitches. The double ribbed cuff gives an extra coziness and keep the mittens fitted to your hand and hold well. The pattern has five parts.

1. Hand shaping & thumb hole
The pattern starts from the wrist and works hand shaping and thumb hole first.
Round 1 starts with sc in each st around and follow the other rounds until round 4. When you reached round 4 skip sts and make thumb hole.
