Uplands Crochet Square Free Pattern
You will love working this Uplands crochet square. This Square features fpdc stitches and it creates a beautiful ribbed pattern all over the square. If you are looking for a square pattern to make blankets, afghans, cushion covers, this Uplands granny square is great for it.
This is a continuous crochet square
While this square is only made in 6” and 12” sizes, you can make any size square by repeating 2 rounds.

Materials:
Yarns: 4-Medium / Worsted / 100% Acrylic yarns. I used Ice Yarn Favorite (Approx: 200 yards)
- Ice Yarn Favorite half skein of Lemon Yellow(C1), small amount of Gold (C2) (Approx: 50 yards), small amount of Camel (C3) (Approx: 50 yards).
- Hook: US I/9, 5.5mm crochet hook
- Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving ends, Scissors
Gauge: 14 hdc x 10 rows = 4″ with US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
Abbreviations (US Term)
- Ch – chain
- Sl st – slip stitch
- Sc – single crochet
- Dc – double crochet
- Fpdc – front post double crochet
- St – stitch
- Ch-sp – chain-space
- Beg – beginning
- *to ; – repeat * to the instructions.
- [ ] or [[ ]] – work instructions within brackets as many times as directed.
- C1 – color 1
- C2 – color 2
- C3 – color 3
Notes
- After crocheting round 3, every fpdc is working in fpdc in previous round.
- You can make any size square by repeating 2 rounds.
Uplands Crochet Square Pattern
With (C1), Make an adjustable ring,
Round 1: ch 3 (count as dc), 2 dc into the ring, [ch 2, 3 dc into the ring] 3 times, ch 2, join with sl st in beg ch 3 top. Sl st until chain space. (12 dc)
Round 2: ch 3 (count as dc), (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, *dc in each of next 3 st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next space; repeat * from around, join with sl st in beg ch 3 top. Sl st in next st. (28 dc)
Round 3: ch 1, fpdc in same st, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-sp, [fpdc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc] 3 times, fpdc in next st; repeat * from around, join with sl st in first fpdc. (32 dc)
Round 4: ch 1, fpdc in same st, dc in next st, fpdc in next st, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-sp, (fpdc in next st, dc in next ch-sp or dc) until next corner ch-sp remain; repeat * from around, join with sl st in first fpdc. (60 sts)
Round 5: ch 1, fpdc in same st, (ch 1, sk next dc, fpdc in next st) until next corner ch-sp remain, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-sp, (fpdc in next st, ch 1, sk next dc) until next corner ch-sp remain; repeat * from around, join with sl st in first fpdc. (48 sts)
Round 6: ch 1, fpdc in same st, (dc in next ch-sp or dc, fpdc in next st) until next corner ch-sp remain, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-sp, (fpdc in next st, dc in next ch-sp or dc) until next corner ch-sp remain; repeat * from around, join with sl st in first fpdc. (92 sts)
After crocheting the first 6 rounds, 6” square is done. To finish the 6” square, you can crochet sc round.
Last round: ch 1, sc in each st around, 3 sc in each corner ch-sp, when you reach the last st, sl st to the first st and fasten off. Weave the ends.
Continue for 12″ square.
Round 7: with (C2), ch 1, fpdc in same st, (ch 1, sk next dc, fpdc in next st) until next corner ch-sp remain, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-sp, (fpdc in next st, ch 1, sk next dc) until next corner ch-sp remain; repeat * from around, join with sl st in first fpdc.
Round 8: with (C1), ch 1, fpdc in same st, (dc in next ch-sp or dc, fpdc in next st) until next corner ch-sp remain, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-sp, (fpdc in next st, dc in next ch-sp or dc) until next corner ch-sp remain; repeat * from around, join with sl st in first fpdc.
Round 9: Repeat round 7 with (C3).
Round 10: Repeat round 8 with (C1).
Round 11: Repeat round 7 with (C2).
Round 12: Repeat round 8 with (C1).
Last round: with (C1), ch 1, sc in each st around, 3 sc in each corner ch-sp, when you reach the last st, sl st to the first st and fasten off.
Weave the ends.
